Abstract

The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) course in India is demanding as far as students' efforts are concerned. Fear of failure, vast amount of content that has to be mastered, inability to cope with the high expectations of self, teachers, parents and peers' are commonly observed sources of stress. This study was conducted to observe the pattern/sources of stress in first year MBBS students at University of Health Sciences, Pt. B.D. Sharma, PGIMS, Rohtak. A total of 135 students returned completed questionnaire pertaining to various academic and non-academic sources of stress. Work overload, poor accommodation/ living conditions and weak student-teacher relationship came out to be the major sources of stress. More comparative studies are required to further aour knowledge about pattern of stress among various universities/places and thus framing out possible explanations and mechanisms to deal with the same.

Abstract

Erectile Dysfunction is a challenging problem that negatively affects the quality of lives of those affected. Sufferers and their partners face a lot of difficulties in various areas of life including relationship problems. Emergence of ED may be attributed to either organic or psychogenic factors but irrespective of causal factors it often lead to emotional and adjustment problems. The present study was carried out to study perceived stress and emotional intelligence and their interaction in individuals diagnosed with Erectile Dysfunction and their healthy counterparts. This cross-sectional study examined 200 male out of which 100 individuals with erectile dysfunction and 100 healthy controls. Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and Emotional Intelligence Scale (EIS) were administered on study group; whereas, in addition to above mentioned scales General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) was also administered on control group. The data obtained for the variables under study have been subjected to different statistical analysis. Significant difference was found in perceived stress and EI scores between study and control group. The findings also indicated significant negative correlation between perceived stress and EI. Overall findings suggest that individual with ED are significantly more stressed and having low emotional intelligence than their healthy counterparts. Thus present study highlights the facts that it is equally important to treat stress in order to achieve better treatment compliance and management. We advocated the need for holistic management including adequate mental health screening and interventions with the persons suffering from ED.

Abstract

Depression and Alcoholism are common disabling conditions and are associated with high suicidal risk . Some researchers have postulated that depressive patients have maladaptive coping strategies, whereas others have suggested alcohol consumption as coping against depression The present study was conducted at Vidya Sagar Department of Psychiatry, PGIMS, Rohtak (Haryana). Thirty patients each of severe depression and alcohol dependence (as per ICD-10) were evaluated on Disability Assessment Schedule, Suicide Risk Estimator Scale, Defense Style Questionnaire and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. The two groups were compared on these parameters and subjected to relevant statistical analysis using SPSS 7.5. Alcohol group had significantly higher number of married patients, higher male-female ratio and more urban patients, than depression group. Depressive group showed higher disability and suicidal risk. However, striking similarities in the socio-demographic variables and coping strategies may be indicative of the much-talked about common etiological link between these disorders. Further research in this area appears rewarding.
